History

Friends of Fumbelo began their work in 2008, prompted by a visit to the impoverished village of Fumbelo, on the outskirts of Lusaka, Zambia’s capital. Many of the children’s parents had died of AIDS and were being raised by their grandmothers. They had never looked at a book or held a marker. All were hungry.

Seventeen years later, we have a new school building, with four committed teachers educating 150 children who otherwise would have no place to go to school.

About the Fumbelo Village School

The School educates 150 orphans or vulnerable children (OVC). First and third graders go to school in the morning. Second and fourth graders go to school in the afternoon. Fifth and sixth graders go to school all day.

There isn’t room in Government schools for all children who wish to attend. The Fumbelo Village School provides an education for children who would otherwise have no opportunity to go to school.

Additional Support

In addition to providing an education in the primary grades, Friends of Fumbelo also supports children to attend Government schools. While Government school is advertised as free and universal, the reality is that children may not attend without uniforms, school shoes, and a backpack, which makes school inaccessible for many children. Friends of Fumbelo provides 85 children with these basic necessities, enabling them to attend Government schools.

Students who graduate from the Fumbelo Village School, which provides primary education through grade 6, will have the support of Friends of Fumbelo to attend a Government secondary school.
